Josh Bell, Trayvon Robinson, Mitch Jones, And Dee Gordon

Josh Bell makes me cry at night.
Late-season power surge

Josh Bell 3B, Orioles (Double-A Bowie)
Monday's stats: 2-for-3, HR (9), R, RBI
When Bell went to Baltimore in the George Sherrill deal, everything about his season took a major step forward except for his power output, as he hit just 11 in 334 at-bats for Double-A Chattanooga. After the trade, the power showed up in a major way, as Bell smashed nine in just 114 at-bats, finishing the year with a .289/.346/.570 line in 33 games for Bowie. Off to the Arizona Fall League, he'll get a genuine look for a big league job next spring.
Trayvon Robinson might be emerging.
Sleeper alert!

Trayvon Robinson, OF, Dodgers (Double-A Chattanooga)
Monday's stats: 2-for-3, 2 HR (2), 2 R, 2 RBI
Robinson struggled a bit at Double-A after moving up in August, but he's still one of the bigger breakout players in the minors this year. A toolsy player from South Central Los Angeles, Robinson has been slow in transforming his tools into performance, but everything came together this year, as his finished the year with a .300 batting average, 17 home runs, 60 walks and 47 stolen bases.
A Mitch Jones sighting!
Slugging Percentage: Mitch Jones, Dodgers (Triple-A Albuquerque): .651
You have to feel good about Jones reaching the big leagues for the first time as a 31-year-old, and in 10 minor league seasons with the Yankees and Dodgers, he's becoming a regular Crash Davis with 235 minor league home runs. The definition of a Quad-A hitter, and that home park (where he slugged a whopping .776) sure helps.
Pretty much what I feel about Dee Gordon as well.
Caught Stealing: Dee Gordon, Dodgers (Low-A Great Lakes): 25
To his credit, Gordon finished second in the minors with 73 stolen bases, so it's not like his stolen-base percentage was bad. Still, this is the perfect opportunity to talk about Gordon, as the main point I can make about this guy is that he hit .301, had 12 triples, 73 stolen bases, and 43 walks, yet he's still really, really raw. The potential here is through the roof, and the only concern is that he's already 21 with the aptitude of a recent high school pick, so he's going to need to ramp things up quickly.

Mitch Jones... hope he gets called up for the playoffs at some point...

yeah Dee Gordon sounds amazing.
I dont like that it said he's like a HS draftee at 21, but he seems to have the tools.

Kensai - what do they mean by Dee looking like a hs draftee anyway? Are they referring to his inconsistency, maturity, discipline...?

dee wont be ready till late next yr or early 2011. Not counting postition(as in, not only SS), who does Dee seem like(a player in the majors). Seems like a Kemp/Upton type w/ less power.... but i dont know scouting very well...

JuanLove said...

dont they like comparing him to JRoll?

lakersdodgersyankees4life said...

never heard that.... or anything. Just curious what his tools(if he devolps, of course) project to be in a player, not just SS. SO if there is an OF thats more comparable, for example, thats what im curious about

I depend on this goofy blog so much for my Dodger news now... Am I to assume that today is an off day for the boys in blue? No TITS GT and no one posting about it...

Good work Kensai... just to let you know again. Really do appreciate the fact that you waste so much of your time to inform all of us junkies.

Wasn't Gordon a HS draftee? Just a touch older than most. Also, such a "raw" player drawing that kind of walk rate is a really, really good sign. I saw him hitting for a high AVG this year, but I sure as hell didn't see that many walks.

I do see the Rollins comparison. Perhaps also a faster developing (with the bat anyway) Omar Vizquel? Upside of perhaps Chone Figgins, only sticking at short?

Stig-I'm looking for a repeat performance from Robinson before I buy in fully. I usually do that with guys I don't see elite tools from. The report says Trayvon is toolsy, and he is, just not in the tools I necessarily like. The power was a surprise, for instance.

Stig-They mean he's raw and unrefined. A lot of the stuff he does wrong isn't polished. Baserunning, plate discipline, pitch recognition, throwing, etc.

JuanLove-Yeah, the compare him to Rollins.

LDY4L-At best, he could be Reyes, I think. Not likely though, obviously.

Stig-No game today, dude. :P

Alireza-Chone with SS eligibility might be a good comparison. More realistic too.

Kensai - Remember that Figgins was a SS in the minors. If Gordon can be that, the Dodgers will be set at the position and at lead off for a long time.

"Josh Bell makes me cry at night."

kensai- Let me fix that for you:

"Ned Colletti makes me cry every night."

kensai said...

Alireza-If Gordon could be Figgins this year, that would be great. :o

I Alivandi said...

Kensai - The one worry I have with Gordan is his ability to drive the ball consistently. Figgins may not hit a ton of homers, but he hits the ball very hard. Gordon is far skinnier than Figgins, which might be a bad sign for physical strength.

BTW, does Gordon switch?

KempKershaw said...

I Alivandi- Gordon does not switch-hit, only lefty.

I Alivandi said...

KK - Lefty is fine. If he was a straight RHB, I would worry a bit more.

kensai said...

Alireza-Could be a problem. So could a lot of things.
