No Red Flags On Garrett Gould

When reading scouting reports on Garrett Gould, one would get the impression that he carries significant injury risk because of poor mechanics. Every report i've seen has at least made a passing mention about his potentially problematic mechanics, so I decided to take a quick and dirty look at them.

Up until this point, there's nothing I find out of the ordinary.

There's some deviation from the norm here, as he tilts back a decent amount. This leads to an oddity with his arm circle.

Just to clarify though, "different" is not synonymous with "bad".

As you can sorta tell, Gould doesn't really take a traditional arm circle to the throwing position. Instead, he drops his hand down vertically and then scap loads horizontally to get his arm in the upright position.

You can see what i'm talking about here. As far as the actual action goes, there's good and bad to this, in my opinion.

Some people don't like the scap loading at all, some think it's okay, and some think it's necessary to throw hard. Personally, I don't think the action is ideal, but it's not that dangerous in and of itself. Moreover, I believe it's a lot less likely to lead to timing issues than the usual alternative action of picking the ball up with your elbow.

Speaking of timing, Gould's seems to be fine. At footstrike, his arm is in the upright and ready position. I believe we would see some minor reverse rotation if we got a different angle, but i'm not overly concerned about it yet.

My least favorite part of his mechanics, by far, is his finish. He's off balance and and his follow through is violent. I don't mind the former so much, but the latter concerns me. Please, somebody fix it.

Overall though, I hardly come away as worried as the experts did. Granted, I am only seeing one video from one appearance and one angle. However, any deep mechanical concerns I had about him have been slightly alleviated for now. To be sure, he's less than ideal, but I still like him all the same.

interesting and always wait for your assessment. Love your prospect profiles.

Gould actually seems to have some similarities to Lincecum, though without the insane hip/shoulder. That arm drop he does looks a bit like inverted L, but actually is something different.

Well done, man. Hottest shit on the streets, no doubt.

My gripe about a guy's mechanics starts and ends with Mark Prior. The guy with the perfect mechanics whose career was derailed by injuries and possibly overuse.

I can't figure what caused which, but I figure as long as the guy has consistent mechanics that he understands and can control, then whatever. I mean, I can't explain to myself why Nomo lasted as long as he did. Its kind of ridiculous to me that his career was way longer than Prior, but that's just me.

Okay, nevermind.

I just googled Mark Prior Mechanics and came up with this fine gem:

I stand corrected. I sure sounded like I knew what I was talking about though, LOL, gotta give me that.

Anon - As most can tell, both Kensai and I are big fans of Chris O'Leary and his work on debunking myths about pitching mechanics.
Prior's mechanics looked easy, but absolutely tore his shoulder apart.

Kensai, where did you get these pictures and does the site breakdown every pitcher like this?

kensai said...

bluetrain-I'll be doing one on him in the off-season.

Alireza-Yeah, I made sure it's not a problem. Inverted whatever isn't as big of a deal if the timing is right anyway.

Anonymous-I don't think Nomo really had bad mechanics though. He just put a lot of stress on his body.

Prior had bad mechanics, IMO. I wouldn't teach a kid to throw like that.

Schruender-I capped the picture myself. The breakdown is mine as well.

I don't copy anything. If I do, it's in quotes and I link to the site.

kensai- You'll be doing a profile on who?

I Alivandi said...

KK - I think he meant a full profile on Gould.

kensai said...

Yes.

kensai said...

And Alireza needs to make his 25-man postseason roster for me. :P

I Alivandi said...

Hey, I just got back today and was in court. Must be nice to be both a beach bum and a college student. :-p

kensai said...

It's quite grand indeed. :P

KempKershaw said...

I Alivandi- Thanks.

kensai- Looking forward to the Gould profile.

telciram said...

kensai- that profile better be done first in the offseason, before any other 2009 draftee,

Or else.

(although i bet you were doing it that way anyway)

kensai said...

telciram-I might do Aaron Miller first. :P

telciram said...

Well that's ok. As long as Gould is second.

What's the ETA on these, late october/early november? I'm assuming that it'll be affected by our playoff performance and if we get eliminated early...

I did them last year before Spring Training. I have video on some of these guys, but the new ones you have to wait on as I beg, borrow, and steal.

There's a reason you can't just do the scouting reports yourselves. I have to whore myself for these things. :P

Besides, I want to watch them in AZL or something. Just in case something changes.

telciram said...

Well, not only that, but i don't have an eye for mechanics or stuff.

kensai said...

Touche.

I didn't think of that. :o

Well, i can notice obvious stuff, i once (in a way) called a Kemp homer during a d-backs game when the pitcher had his non-throwing side knee pointed halfway down the 1st base line during the leg lift. I muttered "this'll be a bad pitch" and BOOM.

I feel proud of that :D
